Shive - Wooden

A wood shive is pounded into the cask (firkin) before a spile is then driven in to allow the cask to breathe. A benefit of wood over a plastic shive is its moldability to the firkin opening. Quite often through use the opening in the firkin is damaged and mis—shapen and the wooden shive is able to mold itself to the opening.
