What are the benefits of having the tank outside the fridge versus inside the fridge?

Space is the primary benefit. Also, having your compressed gas cylinder outside of the refrigeration can allow you to have a larger cylinder and save some $$ on gas as the gas is cheaper the larger cylinder you fill / exchange.
