Default Foam Issue

I've searched on prior posts, but cannot figure out what is wrong with my Kegerator. I bought a door mount kit from micromatic and converted an old fridge to a kegerator. I got a pony keg of Michelob Ligt at 38 degrees at 14 PSI. It doesnt seem to matter where I adjust the temperatur to or the PSI, I get alot of foam. The beer look to be coming out the tap fine, but as soon as it hits the cup I get about 3/4 foam. It also doesnt seem to matter whether I am using a plastic cup or a frosted mug.

Any suggestions of what I could try? Thanks in advance.

The micromatic kit came with a 3/16" vinyl tubing, 5' in length.

No, I picked up the keg and brought it straight home and put it in the fridge. The next day I received my kit in the mail and installed the door mount kit and tapped the keg.

I did not run cleaner through the beer line before I put it on. I know dirty lines can cause foam, but the line seemed perfectly clean.

Not condescending at all, I think I know the proper technique of pouring beer: pouring while slightly tilting the glass.

Are there any more tips to pouring?

Is 38 degrees the liquid beer temp or the fridge temp?

I had a glass of water with a thermometer inside of it. I tried to keep this at 38 degrees as much as possible, the temperature might vary slightly +/- one degree though.

From the MicroMatic FAQ's....

30. Q. What is the proper way to draw a perfect glass of beer?

Start with a glass clean of any residue, including soap film.
Place the glass at a 45° angle, one inch below the faucet. Do not let the glass touch the faucet. Open the faucet all the way in one swift motion.
After the glass has reached ½ full, gradually bring the glass to an upright position.
Let the remaining beer fill straight down the middle of the glass. This insures proper release of CO2 by producing a ¾" to 1" foam head.
Close the faucet completely in one quick motion.

One of the big things is to make sure you open and close the faucet in one quick motion!

Unfortunately before the glass is half full foam is pouring over the top of the glass. I read of your "Chug" method of finding the liquid temperature in another post. I'll try that later this evening and see if the liquid temperature is truly 38 degrees. I'll also make sure I am opening and closing the tap in one quick motion.

Thanks for your suggestions, hopefully I'll find out what is wrong. If anyone has anything else feel free to throw it out.

If everything else is right and your still getting foam with the correct pour method I would recomend doing two things. First off, clean your lines, coupler and faucet with BLC, you should have done this prior to instalation as there can be contaminants from the manufacturing process and shipping. Second, release the presure from your keg before adjusting your regulator back to 14 PSI. In your quest to get it right you may have over presurized it.

Forgive my ignorance, but exactly how do I release the pressure from my keg? Also do I completely depressureize it? I just want to make sure I dont mess anything up, mainly the beer. As I've read before, foam = beer.

brett, There should be a preasure release valve on your coupler. It will look like a brass pin with a wire ring on it. With your coupler on your keg turn off the gas from your regulator and pul the pin on the coupler and leave it open until the gas sound stops. Then make sure it is fully seated again before turning on your CO2 again and adjusting to your preasure.

Thanks again for your help. Once I depressurize the keg will I need to let it sit for while before pouring another beer or will it be ready as soon as I adjust the pressure back to 14 PSI?

You should be ok once you get your pressure set again... That is as long as you have cleaned all your components with BLC as mentioned before... Glad to have been of help, I'll check back with you on it tomorrow, I would check with you later tonight but we're going to visit the in-laws so I can fix their water heater... Good luck!

I went home and washed the faucet, coupler, and beer line. Then I depressurized the keg. I think my biggest problem may have actually been the pouring. Instead of quickly opening and closing the tap I found that sometimes I would just slowly open it.

I didnt get a chance to experiment with it too much last night, but the one cup I did pour seemed to have less foam. I plan on doing many more experiments tonight.

Thanks for your help USMC.

Glad to hear things are looking better for you. Hate the thought of anyone wasting beer with foam issues... Cheers bud!
