Default Born on date

I picked up a 1/6th of Shocktop a few days ago. The born on date says june 11th. With a keg thats already a month old, how much longer until this beer starts to taste bad. I have had shock top before, its decent, but it doesent taste too great already. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I personally think they should have not sold that to you. My beer guy told me that when a keg reaches it born on date age the distributor will come pick it up and replace it. So far all the kegs ive bought have well over a month left before the freshness date. I think you should call the store and see what they have to say about it.

I also walk back in the cooler now, look for the beer that I want and find the best date.

Let me know what they say to you.

Doesn't 'born on' mean the day it was kegged? It's not the expiration date. Today is July 8th, so it's less than one month old. Non-pasteurized beer should stay good for 45-60 days.

Yeah, for A/B products the BORN ON date is just that. It's the date the beer was put into the keg. So yes, it's less than a month old, and should be just fine for another month, maybe even longer. Honestly I think the "60 days" is probably on the conservative side. I've never had a keg last that long, but I know plenty of people who have had kegs for 3 months that they think taste quite fine. And I am talking about beer geeks who obsess over what they drink and how it tastes.

A 1/6 barrel wouldn't last longer than 8 or 10 days in my house.

Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery
and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might
be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself,
"It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than
be selfish and worry about my liver."

Default Born on Date

I work for A/B and we would pull a keg that is 50 days past the born on date. That doesn't necessarily mean that it is bad. I've had kegs in my kegerator that have lasted 3 months and tasted just fine.

Just got back from the liquor store and looked at all the A/B kegs. They were all around a month past their born on date so I guess your June 11th date is okay. The guy told me all the A/B kegs are in and out of their store within a week. So I guess I'm not sure what use the born on date is.

Most other microbrews have a freshness date which is more like an expiration date. I think.
