Default Tap leaks when disconnected

Older domestic, "wing nut" type tap leaks CO2 at the base when disconnected from keg. This is a unit I used to operate twenty years ago and am in the process of refurbishing. It's been so long, that I can't remember if this is normal or not. I haven't tapped a keg yet so I don't know if the tap will leak when hooked to a keg. The rest of the system has pressured checked out OK. The lines are new, on both sides and everything has been cleaned and sterilized.

Will this tap likely leak when hooked to a keg, or can I just shut off the CO2 when changing kegs? Do I need a new tap or a rebuild or should I try it on a keg?

Thanks to everyone in advance. This is an awesome resource.

Glad you are finding the forum useful Keydbplyr.

Soak the coupler in warm water for about 5 minutes. Give it a clean and scrub. Engage/disengage it several times (not in the keg of course). This should loosen it up if it won’t fully disengage now. If that doesn't work, I would recommend buying a new one since it's tough to say if the co2 will leak when engaged in the keg.

The test we use with our accounts is when it's engaged in the keg and you can move it side to side (bend it slightly), the seals are worn/gone and need to be replaced. You will find that it will effect your pouring as co2 will eventually leak into the outgoing beer and into your fridge as well.
