Default Cooling Issue

Help,
I went away on a oversea's Detachment and when I came back my keggerator had a huge ICE ball built up against the back wall. As I melted and chipped away the Ice something broke and popped a whole in the mat at the back and started spueing out a gas that I assume was freon. All I know is it smelled really bad. I'm not even sure I know the name of the part that I need to replace. It's the white mat at the back that has lines on it that wrap's around. I would appreciate any help that will point me in the right direction. Thank you for your time and help.

I'll give it to you straight. You've got big problems. When you chipped away at the ice you put a hole in the evaporator plate. I presume this is a unit that is newer than 1994 so that is an additional problem. Units newer than '94 use an oil in the system that is hygroscopic, meaning it can suck up moisture like a sponge. Moisture in a refrigeration system is very difficult to get rid of. Moisture can cause acids to form & can cause restrictions by forming ice in the system. The evaporator plate is probably made from stamped aluminum so you cannot simply weld the leak shut. The evaporator would need to be replaced. This is something only a service company that specializes in those units could do. Bottom line... $$$. Sorry.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you or anyone else know who I need to contact for a replacement part. I bought mine at the NAVY exchange and lets just say they are less then knowledgeable.

I would suggest doing a Google search for the make & model of your unit, whatever it is.
