    Default Guinness Draft

I could use some help. I'm a member of a private club in the Florida Keys and we have been asked to host an Irish wedding. The couple would like to have Guinness on tap but none of the local suppliers can help with the mixed gas tap. (this is a one time deal) What I would like to know is if Guinness can be tapped with the pumper type shown on the web site. We will only be serving for a limited time (couple hours) and once the wedding is over so is the Guinness. Please let me know if this is possible, the Irish are depanding on it!

    Thanks,
    Pat

Can you, sure. Will it be as good as from the pub, nope. The normal Guinness set up in the pub features a special faucet with a flow restrictor, this small disc with precisely drilled holes along with the specially mixed gas (75/25 N2/CO2) causes the unique bubbling phenomena so associated with dry Irish stout as well as the creamy mouthfeel. Looking back through the micromatic catalog they have a picnic pump for the U type (Guinness) coupler, so you could hook it up but it just wouldn't achieve exactly the effect most be would be expecting if they're true afficinados.

That said I've run a keg of Guinness off a regular party pump and it's still tasty just not as creamy.

FWIW Beamish is an even better dry Irish stout, but that's a whole 'nother story.

I'm sure Mike-cromatic (ha!) will have some hints for you.

I agree with Auld Og, you can use a party pump to get Guinness out of the keg. However a party pump utilizes air to move the beer which is not the same as the mixed gas that is the correct method. Mixed "Guinness Gas" or "Alley Gas" in a 5lb cylinder should be a readily available. I suggest trying some other sources. Otherwise your party-goers will not have a true Guinness experience. Ask the Guinness wholesaler in your area for help in locating a gas source.

Don't forget, you will also need a special Guinness (stout-style) faucet.
