new to this, but determined
Okay I've been reading and reading here for several months now, and I feel like I'm ready to try my first keg.
Here is the twist: I'm going to go on a road trip with my keg before I tap it. I have built a homemade keg/icebox out of two trash cans. One is smaller and is inside the larger outer trash can. In between the two is about 2.5 inches of Great Stuff foam. My plan is to put a sixth barrel of Boulevard Wheat or Blue Moon in it with ice and drive 9 hours to my "camping" site. How cold will a suspended sixth barrel get in icey water? Will the beer get cold enough? Will it get too cold possibly? How long should I let the keg settle after the long drive?
I'm using a paintball tank for co2, and have purchased all my hardware from MM. I have a low profile coupler. I know that I will have to adjust my line length for good pours.
Thanks for reading this. Any advice will be GREATLY appreciated. Has anyone tried a setup like this? Is it stupid?

If you keep it in the ice bath the whole time your temp should be good. I've done something similar with a jockey box for a college football game. Let the keg settle for an hour or so and you should be good to go.
How are you regulating the pressure off the CO2 bottle?

Ice water is normally 32 F. 12 PSIG with five to six feet of 3/16" should work. Try to keep the beer line in the ice water.

Someone on here was making a trailer to haul their dispensing equipment behind a 4 wheeler. I wonder how that turned out.

Maybe try....
...making a saltwater (rocksalt) brine. The water will get below freezing point without freezing. Thus giving you more cold surface area.
Can't believe I used the word "Thus" in a beer forum. Maybe I'm over thinking this. Thus.

You guys ROCK! Thanks for the quick responses.
I'm using the primary double guage premium co2 regulator part # 642
I will be suspending the beer line in the ice water to keep it cold. I've had others suggest the salt water idea. I'll try it. I'll try whatever it takes for good draft beer.
When I'm done, I'll post a picture. I used an old fashioned metal trash can for the outer shell, and a golf ball that I drilled out for the tap handle. It's pretty goofy looking.

Sounds like a good setup. Not bad for "camping" in style.
