Keg Shelf life

Hey everyone i just had a question. So i bought a keg from someone that had been untaped untill i got it. Me and my friend put it in ice for a couple hours then taped it. We have had it not on ice for about a week and a half now, and it started to taste sour, so we just emptyed it out.

I had two questions. Is it bad to leave it outside for the time being, even if it is empty?? we used an air tap. btw

and will there be bacteria groth inside the keg?? and if so is there anyway to clean it out???

Without refrigeration, it is not going to last. And once you try to push it with a party pump, you put air in it in start a quick death of the taste.

yes that is what im working with

Then it won't matter. You won't have it refilled, you will just get another and leave the empty instead of a deposit. Of course when you go to do this, depending on what state you are in and keg registration and whatnot, you may have to prove that you came by the empty legally.

well I live in Seattle, WA.

We actualy bought the keg from someone who was selling it on cragslist, and he was selling it because he sold his bar. Anyway so they would just give us a whole new keg when we go to have it refilled, im confused...

It likely won't be a new keg, just a refilled one. The the keg you brought back will be cleaned and filled again for the next customer by the brewer.

okay i see. so its a pretty simple process. how much does it usualy cost to refill??

You just need to call around your area. Different parts of the country charge different prices for a variety of reasons. For example around here, Bud Light, Miller, etc cost about 100 bucks a keg while real beers are about 120 -130 bucks. But I've heard that other areas Bud and whatnot only run about 75.
