  • Unwanted carboinzation

HI all I am new here. If there is a better place for this mods please move. I am looking to put lemonade in my kegerater. I did exactly that and put it on CO2 around 4lb (lowest the reg would go). It was great the first few days. After that it started to carbonate it caused an off taste. think the carbonization causing it. Should I get rid of the CO2 and get a nitrogen tank? Should I mix the 2 or am I completely off base? Thanks for reading and thanks for comments.

I've heard that the acidity of lemon aid can cause a chemical reaction with the copper faucet that imparts a metallic taste. Stainless steel components are best suited for this application.

How about the coupler and tail pieces?

coupler is SS also. Is it possible to be anything else? It is in a kegerator. I didn't take it out but think it is SS. I am not real skilled in this area.

The cheaper ones are chrome plated brass.

If you check out the couplers on the front page here you will see only a few are stainless. It may have S.S. body but that never touches beer, the probe does and that is steal with thin chrome/nickel plating, if the plating wears thin then exposed steel. And when you're talking tail pieces most are copper. If you buy the ones approved for wine which also has acidity you should be okay. Wine approved couple, tail pieces and faucet ie Stainless steel industry standards. Is it hard lemon aid? otherwise why keg space it when your frig is right there with out the hassle?

Some people have reported what they perceive to be a metallic taste from over carbed beer. At 4 psi I would think it's not likely. Your first thought was that it was carb so here's a test you can perform to isolate if it's your hyper sensitivity to Co2. or acid reaction to metal. Un-tap the corny keg and vent it for a day, shake it a few times and then re-tap it and taste. If the flavor recovers it is Co2 since you removed it though that process. If it's still tainted buy All new expensise S.S. gear or better yet keep the soft lemon aid next to the sweet tea in the frig.

I have a little progress to report. I now have a nitrogen tank and am gonna start using that on top of a bed of CO2. Secondly I pulled the faucet apart and was incorrect. It is brass with chrome over it. Some of the chrome is off. It was nasty. 3dly I am gonna change from a beer keg to a corny keg. The Keg coupler looks Stainless but I have all the Corny stuff so it will be all fine. It might be a week or 2 before I get it all going the N to Co2 adapter was back ordered and waiting on faucet.
