  • Perlick garage sale find put to the test

    As suggested by djc and Killianboy I put my $30 dollar garage sale find to the 24 hour test. The first 24 hours gave me a frozen 5 gallon bucket at 3/4 setting. I'm going to back the thermostat off a bit and give it another 24 hours.

    If the water is presently 35 F. or less The test is complete and your unit passed. No need for another 24 hrs.

      I agree with pvs6, it works, not much more a 5 gallon bucket will tell you if you wait 24 hours.
      I doubt you froze entire bucket, can you describe the freezing (like a frozen lake, slush, other)?
      From parts breakdown from PartsTown, it seems to have a evaporator fan blowing down, might be the top of bucket is in path of airflow? Check if it has some sort of tower cooler, usually a hose running from around fan. On my end the attachments don't seem to work, I'll check again and see (yup, nothing a moderator can do, if OP can't fix, I'll contact an administrator), but if pictures of unit, thanks, it is the best way for members to figure your unit out.

        I started the second test yesterday before posting this. There was about 2" of solid ice in the bucket which was probably caused by the fan KillianBoy mentioned. The second test after the adjustment and 24 hours gave me 36 degrees. There is a tube going to the tower, but isn't near the fan. I'll try another attempt at picturesimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

          I checked the partstown site and couldn't find parts for tower cooler hose, it might be a add-on, look for a hole the size of hose anywhere on metal area, this is a link to PDF at Partstown:

          I righted picture and wrote comments, you should clean and replace parts (not a DIY store but hose from DIY store), can you post which way the airflow is flowing? It should be blowing down.
          Honestly with what you paid it might be best to just replace the entire evaporator assembly, everything looks pretty dirty.

            It appears the fan is flowing to the top. It will suck a paper towel against the fan guard. Thanks for the pdf and comments on the picture. Is it possible to clean the evaporator? At $1100 to replace from parts town, I'm not sure I want to put that into the unit. The whole inside needs cleaning, rust, etc.
            Thanks for any direction, maybe I should cut my losses.

              Understand your unit when brand new would have cost $4000-6000, it would be considered on the higher end side of the market. I think no matter up to $1500, it is a unit worth fixing up.
              Everything should be cleanable, the main problem is the fan motor, which if gotten wet should be thoroughly dried out before running electricity through.
              What I would do is try to take the fan guard and the filter? off assembly, if you can take off, just clean and re-attach or reverse try and take out motor (maybe replace?), clean everything well and re-mount motor. Unless rusted through, rust can be removed, check forum (use"rust"), some members have used pressure washers to clean the inside of units.
              If the tower is a 2 1/2 inch wide one, replace with a 3 inch, get a new blower hose and figure out how it was able to get air through.

                Thanks for all the info. And direction. I think I will go the tear down route and clean up to see what I have. I might post pics. Of the process and finished results.

                  One other question. Should the evap fan blow down the back of the unit or suck and blow throw the evaporator?

                    In most similar units the fan blows into unit, still unsure what that panel is. It might be a type of filter and just blocked preventing flow from the fan. I'd clean unit up and see and wait for someone with experience with this type of unit. Might be a while , don't think anyone ever posted they had or serviced this unit.

                      Fans are more efficient at pushing air than pulling it. This fan blows air into the cooling housing.

                      The tower cooling hose was a previous owner attempt to cool the tower and a poor one at that. It relied on exhausting air from the cooling fan to push air around the bends and up the tower, I doubt it's CFM was more than single digits.
                      Shorten the hose so it runs straight to the tower and then 90 degree up it. Add a PC fan like this one to the end of the hose between hose and cooling housing's grate.

                      It appears to be a 1 1/2 hose so if you trim the corners off this fan it will fit nicely inside of the hose and push enough air up the straighten shorten hose to adequately cool the tower. If it's a 2" hose use a 60mm fan instead. Run the 12 volt dc wall warts little power wire right in the Co2 line hole.

                      You got the deal of the century a $30 unit that cools well. No need to replace the evaporator it works great. 60# of compressed air will blow out the dust and dirt. Invest in new beer line, a faucet, snap together a tower cooler and get a keg, and revel in your good fortune.

                        Killian what we're seeing there and agree it's somewhat hard to tell in the photo, is the protective diamond grate covering the cooling fins. This evaporator looks just like a cars radiator. This one has some dust bunnies thrown in.

                            What pvs6 says makes sense, and explains the cost of the assembly, see if you can clean out the evaporator and fan carefully (vacuum cleaner and compressed air), take guard off and see if badly rusted or just dirty, looks like you may have to take the top off to access area behind the evaporator.

                              It does look like a cars radiator. I was wondering about using A-coil cleaner that is used in he heating and A/C field. That may be over kill though. The tower is a 3" and I was wondering about using PVC pipe to cool the tower. Will air blowing through the evaporator be enough to cool it, or should I hook it up to a separate blower. Also other posts indicate a fan may be needed to circulate air. Do you think it is needed for this unit?
