  • Beverage Air BM23 stopped running.

The motor arced and burned out on my old (1975?) BM23. I replaced the motor and overload switch, checked continuity between all three contacts, start relay and overload switch, on the compressor to ground and there was none. The compressor does not run, nor does the new condenser fan but the evaporator fan does run. When I connect a continuity tester to the two terminals on the start relay and turn it over, I get continuity. The start relay did not click or anything when I plugged the unit in. I thought about shorting the thermostat but wasn't sure if I should try that. I am not a refrigeration guy. Is there anything else I should try before I take this to a shop, or scrap it?

What 'motor' are you referring to? The compressor?
Sounds like you are not getting power to the compressor & condenser fan. Pretty much the only way that happens is if the temp control contacts are open.

The condenser fan motor had a hole burned through the plate on the back. I removed and tested it, it was done. I bought a replacement for $28.00 from a refrigeration supply house and a overload (protector?) switch but after installing both, nothing was running but the evaporator fan. That was last night. This evening I did a bit more probing and found two wires which had been burnt through when the condenser motor sparked through the housing. I repaired those two wires and right now it is running and getting cold. So you are absolutely correct, I was not getting power to compressor or condenser fan. I just need now to figure out how to replace the cover over the overload, start relay etc. Thanks for responding. I am hoping for the best.
