Half KEgs

Hi,
I am about to build my first keggerrator, I just bought myself a freezer tonight, but the thing is the coils are inside freezer like racks instead of in the back. So the measurements wont fit a full keg unless I bend the coils and that could lead to some problems if not done correctly. here is what I was thinking.

1) Buy two different kinds of half kegs and stick them in there, that way I have two different types of beers and a dual keggerator.

Do they sell half kegs at alot of places or are they hard to get, I dont want to build it if its not really available at alot of places. do they make only certain types of beers in half kegs, what about heineken? do they make that in half kegs or is it only american D system for half kegs.

Is it too late to take your freezer back and get what you need? The two tap idea doesn't sound too bad although I don't know about these coils you are talking about. Are you saying that the keg will be sitting directly on top of the coils?

Kegs come in 1/6's, 1/4's, and 1/2's. I think most domestics come like that, and most imports come in 1/2's. I drink Amstel Light and that only comes in 1/2's, so I'm sure that is the way Heineken comes.

I would recommend against bending the coils, that will surely end you up with a broken freezer. As John said kegs come in 1/2, 1/4 and 1/6th barrel sizes. It is a common mistake to refer to a half barrel as a full keg so don't feel too bad. I am just generalizing here but typically major brewers (Bud, Coors, etc) will offer both 1/2 and 1/4 barrel kegs and microbrews will come in 1/2 and possibly 1/6 barrels. Imports are a little more unpredictable but I mostly see those in 1/2 barrels. Bottom line, you are seriously limiting you choices if you keep the fridge. If you know what you want to serve and it will be consistent, call around and find out if your brand comes in 1/4 bbl's and go nuts. I personally would shop around for a slightly bigger fridge to accommodate the full range of choices. Good luck!
