Default Freezer removal?

I bought a kenmore fridge and it's all one unit (i.e. 1 door).

The freezer and refridgerator are all in the same area. I have looked at the freezer part and it's a rectangualar steel piece w/ a coil on one side just laying against it and a small sensor/thermometer underneither.

I will get a pic later and post it.

My question is... Can I remove the steel piece for more room in the fridge as long as i keep the sensor connected?

Does the cooling coil need that steel piece to keep things cold?

Thanks alot for the help guys.

Sorry about the spelling.. i'm a tad hungover..
