Default Refrigerator Conversion Question

I have recently purchased the necessary equipment to convert a refrigerator into a kegerator. I thought for sure that my refrigerator would fit the keg but it appears that the depth of the refrigerator is 1.5 inches too shallow to fit the 17 inch diameter of the keg. I am wanting to know if you can remove some of the internal structure of the refrigerator (door panel, back panel) without harming the cooling ability/integrity of the refrigerator. There are no door shelves on the vintage 1950 General Electric fridge of mine to remove, it is simply one large metal piece. Please let me know what you think I can do, if anything, to gain the 1.5 inchest that I need.

If it's a 1950's fridge there should be no cooling lines in the walls so you don't need to warry about that. My only concern would be for the insulation. But, here is a thought for you. Why not use the tall slim 1/4 kegs instead of a half barrel?
