    Default CO2 line size

From everything I've been reading on here - and what the local homebrew store told me - gas line is 5/16". I was at an estate sale last week and picked up a bunch of old draught beer equipment and fittings and one of the items in the batch was a three-port brass manifold with 3/8" flared brass check valves in it. It looks like a 3/4" hex shaped piece of brace with a 1/2" male inlet on one end. I also got a new looking secondary regulator from NADS that has two of that same size check valves attached, along with a 1/2" threaded nipple. The barbed connectors that were attached to the check valves on the regulator are only 1/4" and easily slip in and out of a 5/16" gas line. It seems that I'm asking for a leaky connection if I try to use that size connector with the 5/16" line. The connectors fit inside of a nut that attaches to the flared check valves, much like a smalle version of a tailpiece.

Is it OK to use a smaller line for CO2 or will the 1/4" tailpiece work, or should I get another tailpiece?

In my haul, there were a ton of fittings - connectors and tailpieces of all sizes. Is there a reference guide somewhere that explains what all of the different sizes are used for? Also, does the closer spacing of the barbs indicate stainless steel?

co2 line size doesn't make a difference. As long as it fits on the connections without leaking.

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed.
Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery
and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might
be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself,
"It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than
be selfish and worry about my liver."

I used 3/16 inch beer line for both beer AND co2 as do many other homebrewers do. Just makes having spare for reconfigs fast and easy.
