    Default Beer Gas Hookup --washer?

    Gentlemen,

Just bought brand new MDD-23 and all hookup hardware -namely a dual guage micromatic regulator, special faucet, etc. and 10 lb tank of beer mix ( running Guinness).

I read repeatedly on this forum about a paper/cardboard gasket or washer that is inserted inside the receptacle of the gas tank and the nipple of the regulator. I don't have that washer/gasket. My brother cautioned me via phone that if I don't have the washer the gas will leak out overnight

So......I stopped by the Airgas dealer(35 miles away) and picked up what he said was the gasket I needed...and it doesn't fit and is obviously not the right gasket

So....I went ahead and hooked up the regulator (I didn't tap the keg) to the gas w/o a gasket and sprayed soapy water on the connection. No leak ...nothing

Now I am confused. Are there 2 different types of regulator connections?? This regulator has a rubber O-ring around end of the nipple on the fitting. Will a leak eventually develop if I don't have the gasket? What is the size of the gasket that I need?

I don't want to tap the keg, develop a leak, lose pressure and ruin the keg over the weekend. But... man...I'm really wanting a cold beer from my new kegerator....

Thanks for all the help you guys have given me through this forum

You'll be fine. The gasket they are talking about is probably for a co2 regulator. The nitrogen ones that I've seen have the gasket built in if they need one at all. One way to be certain of a leak from connection is to have the shut off valve underneath the regulator in the off poistion. Hook the regulator to the tank, turn on the tank and wait a minute or so. You will see the gauges move up to the appropriate levels. Now turn off the tank and watch the high side (usually the one on the left) regulator and see if the pressure holds. Wait 5 minutes or so to be sure, if it holds your are fine. Open the bottom valve leading to your system and repeat test and you will see if there are any leaks down stream too.

There are definitely different regulators. My neighbor and I bought the same Danby model from the same store a mere 2 months apart. His regulator is completely different than mine, and uses a metal washer with a rubber gasket insert that doesn't even fit in my regulator. I don't have any washer at all, and I've never had a leak.

Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery
and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might
be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself,
"It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than
be selfish and worry about my liver."
