Picked up a 1/2 barrel of Bells Two Hearted today for $149.
-
For those in the Portland, OR. area, McMennamins Brew Pubs sells 1/2bbls of their craft beer for $85!!! Best deal I have found. Only issues are they run the Golden Gate taps which are HARD to come by and they use the old "Firkin" type kegs which are a bit cumbersome and take up a lot of space.

BEER. The reason I get up every afternoon!
-
Well, I have really good (bad?) news. I was calling around some local breweries to check prices.....
Now, as much as I love Sweetness Stout from Walter Payton's.....there are a couple of local beers that I like even more. Also, Sweetness stout is a CO2 beer made with lactose.....and let's just say me and lactose don't dance....but I put up with it because I really like this beer. Also, being that it is only $100 to have a 1/2 barrel cleaned and filled....you have to love this place.
However, a brewery about 40 minutes away makes a stout I like even more. Emmett's Ale House in Downers Grove has a "Double Barrel Oatmeal Stout".....dispensed with Nitrogen. This beer is way up there on my list....and so silky smooth...
$115 for a 1/2 barrel at Emmett's. Do I dare go down the nitrogen road?
On tap right now:
Corny of Walter Payton's Dancing Bear Honey Wheat
Corny of Walter Payton's Aurora Amber Ale
Gone, but not forgotten:
Sixtel of Sam Adams OctoberFest
Sixtel of Walter Payton's Peat Smoked Scotch Ale
Sixtel of Walter Payton's Dancing Bear Honey Wheat
Corny of Walter Payton's Sweetness Stout

i bought a case of that for camping over the summer because the wife wanted it. it's ok but $126 for 1/2 is nuts. it's not that good of a beer.
get sam adams winter lager instead

1/2 barrel of New Belgium Fat Tire and all seasonal ales (like 2 Below) for $100. Checkmate.
(Queue envious comments in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...)

I found a 1/2bbl of Shiner for $95.99 at Albertsons in Plano, Tx at Custer/15th. That's the best price I've found. Good prices on the other common domestics, too.

Yep, Fat Tire's a nice well-balanced ale. Fortunately, I live about 4 miles from the brewery, so inventory's never an issue ...

last night i got 1/2 of yuengling lager for $85 + $30 deposit and a case of dogfish head 60 minute for less than the sam adams boston or winter lager would have been. (like $130 + 30 deposit)
the dude said that yuengling didnt raise their prices like everyone else did. it's hard to justify paying $45 more for the sam adams when i like the yuengling lager just as much.
YL is only 4.4% ABV and SA WL is 5.8%, so i would have to drink less of the SA to get drunk. who am i kidding, i'd still drink the same amount and just be more dunk. ha

I just got a 1/2 barrel of Bells Two Hearted IPA for $149. Not bad for one of the best beers in the world!

sam's winter lager
Just picked up a sixtel of sam adams winter lager for $65.00. no deposit required. I also have a sixtel of bud light wheat, paid $38.00 for it. I live in western maryland.

Picked up a new 1/2 of Boulevard Pale Ale this afternoon for $138.86. It was warm ( I wish Okla. would get beyond of the dark ages of alcohol laws) so it's chillin' tonight and will tap it tomorrow.
We have a new brewery in town but our laws prevent them from selling directly to the public! INSANE!

That sucks! The ONLY reason why I built a kegerator was so that I could get beer from a local brewery. It's $7.00 a gallon (+tax) to fill up a corny or sixtel, and $6.45 a gallon (+tax) to fill up a 1/4 or a 1/2 at my local spot.
On tap right now:
Corny of Walter Payton's Dancing Bear Honey Wheat

It truly does, Panthermark. Okla law requires that brewers and distillers can only sell to distributors, who sell to retailers, who, then, sell to the public. A brew pub opened here a few years back and lasted only a short time because they had to "sell" their product to a distributor who "sold" it to their bar. The beer never actually left their premises but cost as much as an import!
I built my kegerator by accident. I wanted to build one for the two weeks each year that I volunteer for the Tulsa Oktoberfest. Afterward, I just brought it home. Economically: it cost the same, if not more, than buying cases of cans or bottles. I do like the reduced trash output though.

Depends on what kind of beer you're buying.... or making.

Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery
and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might
be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself,

Most domestic beer here is ABV 3.2. I don't bother with it. Every thing else must be purchased from a liquor store; warm. Before the kegerator, I only drank beer occasionally, I imbibed distilled spirits. My wife, on the other hand, is (was) a 12 pack /day Coors Light drinker. (Yuck!) I refused to any light or 3.2 for that matter. Fortunately, she likes the Boulevard Pale Ale which is decent but I'd like to find some others she'd like.
I've never brewed any beer myself, but .....

1/2 of Miller Lite now is $93.00 & change in Mt. Carmel, PA.
Was told prices went up again recently.
-
I paid about 80 for sixth of sam adams octoberfest and about a $162.00 for 1/2 of sa winterlager. In the tampa area. By the way does anybody know a realiable keg dealer in srping hill, florida ?
-
1/4 Yeungling (in tall 1/4) is 49.00 here in NJ which does not include the recently increased taxes on alcoholic beverages. I'm mostly a home brewer but want to see how commercial draft tastes in the system. I may stick to only homebrew which tends to cost about 1/2 of what even the cheaper brewery batches cost at retail. NJs tax / graft / special interest culture makes everthing cost a lot more. See this article on NJ liquor licenses l - A $1,000,000 for license in some towns!

I just checked out prices at my local liquor store in central Alberta, Canada. It looks like 1/2 barrels run about $210 to $225 for pretty much anything. Although that is massively more than you guys are paying in the states, I'll put it in perspective for you. For a keg of Pilsner (made by Molson) I will save about $80 per keg compared to buying it in 24 packs. For a keg of Steamwhistle (made in Ontario) I will save about $120 per keg compared to buying it in 12 packs.

Yeah, but you canucks get four seasons, awesome peewee hockey, and managed to get Celine Dion to move here.

It seems like it would be cheaper to brew your own beer.....

Wow, that's a lot especially considering it is probably one of the worst brewed beers in America. Anyway in Florida at the place where I buy my beer, (which shall remain nameless or I'll get banned for spamming) Bud is 74.99, Bud Lite is the same price. I never buy that though, not even if it was 10 bucks, or free for that matter. I usually get Yuengling Lager for 74.99 or Killian's Irish Red for 79.99. They also have Harpoon IPA. It's a very good micro brew and it is only 97.99. These prices are assuming you have a keg to return.

Simply naming the store where you buy your beer in a forum where we discuss this type of thing often will not get you banned if it is on topic.
Unless you are trying to sell your own products, advertise for a direct competitor to Micro Matic or link to one of those tower coolers the guy got the idea for here you likely won't have any problems.

As I've looked through this thread...it would seem you are doing really good if you can get a 1/2bbl of "better beer" for roughly $100. A lot of the "premiums" seem to go for $150.
Yes...the term "better" can mean many different things to different people...so maybe I should say a "non-standard Bud, Miller, or Coors" for $100 is pretty good. Someone was able to get Fat Tire for $100...that is really sweet...I don't think anyone will ever be able to find a 1/2 of Sam Adams for $100....
I've never had Yuenglings.....and I understand it as in east coast beer.
I wonder if it is similar to our Lienenkugel's here in the midwest....or maybe closer to Old Stlye?

Schlafly, here in St. Louis, sells 50L kegs of their brew for $100, which is a great deal, to me. They make some really good beers. I like their Dry Hopped APA, which is just shy of an IPA, IMO, when fresh.

in the seattle area, bud/miller/coors runs $90-$120 for a 1/2 barrel... but a 1/2 barrel of sam adams is $130, and mcmenamins brew pubs have 1/2 barrels on special for $85, normally just over $100.
but the real problem is finding places that have kegs... there are few retail dealers and unless a pub has a 'kegs to go' added to their license they can't sell them to the public.

Yeah, my friend ordered Dogfish Head 60M IPA for his first keg. With tax, it was over $100 for a sixtel. Then he switched to 1/2's of 312 from Goose Island.....but some of his friends were coming over and drinking it all.
Now...he's down down to buying 1/2's of LaBatt's...
