That's ridiculous.
(Unless that includes a $80.00 deposit)

The guinness is a little high. But I can't imagine anyone paying $140 for bud light. That's almost a buck a beer. You can usually buy 30 packs of cans for about 55 cents a beer where I live. But if you lived in So-Cal, holy cow there are some awesome beers to be had there. You can get a 1/2 barrel of Stone Arrogant Bastard at the brewery for ~$130 or so. Shop around DannyBoy, I think you can find a better price on Bud Light somewhere around there.

i paid 155 for 1/2 of Dogfish Head 60 min last Friday hear in North East, MD.
yum yum...

Well it beats $6/pint at the local pub! That's how I justify it to myself. And I did shop around a little bit based on your suggestions. Looks like I can get bud light kegs for about $100-110 in the future. But can't really find Guinness for under $170.

the Guinness is not what I was shocked about. In Jersey, you can get almost any domestic beer for 60 bucks a 1/2 keg.

i have only priced bud light and natural light so far....
In alabama at WalMart bud light = 85$ and Natural light = 69$
They will only take return kegs if they are from that particula store??? so the empty i had is no good to them...had to pay 50$ deposit.
-
bama?
This is really off topic but really bama? sugar bowl really? Thats insulting. Im a huge bama fan as i was born in raised in birmingham..... a completely different story. I know up by me (beltway fine wine and spirit as mentioned by Tech5), as long as it had a keg registration they dont care who return the keg as long as someone brings it back

I got a quote today for Founders Dirty Bastard scotch ale for $164 for a 1/2 barrel. I ordered it and will have it on Monday!

That's a pretty good price IMO for a mighty fine beer. I paid $185 for a 1/2 barrel of Founder's Centennial IPA a few months back.
I just got a 50L keg of Schlafly Hop Harvest for $100. It's a local brew pub (the beer is Schlafly, the name of the brew pub downtown is The Tap Room), so not many have probably heard of this. It was a fall seasonal ONLY available at their brew pub on draft this year. I was at a private party at the brew pub on a Friday night several weeks ago, and we got a brewery tour from one of their brewers. I mentioned to him at the end of the tour that I was disappointed they weren't letting the public buy kegs of this, this year. To which he responded "Well you're talking to the right guy, I make the beer. We have 7 kegs left, if we don't blow through them this weekend, I'll save one for you." We had a short conversation, I gave him my name, and I faxed in the Monday following and put in an order for one of their year round always available beers (he told me to do this). He highjacked my fax order and set aside one of their last kegs of this. He even held the keg for me for a month in their walk in cooler while I finished the current keg I had (probably helped that I told him my regular beer is their Schlafly Dry Hopped APA). So I just tapped this freaky good beer last night.
So anyways, if you're ever in St. Louis and you enjoy a good brew pub, you have to check out the Tap Room. They have 7 or 8 draft choices, and usually one or two beers on cask as well. (Currently Vanilla Bean Coffee Stout and their awesome Imperial Stout on cask!)

Of the two liquor major liquor stores here in Lafayette/West Lafayette, I was quoted $167 for 1/2 bl of DFH 60-minute IPA by one, and $210 by the other. I don't know which distributors they are using, but seriously?!
Oh, and curiously, I tried to see if they could get Bell's HopSlam (limited release). Cheap place said they couldn't get it at all (on-premise sales only), and expensive place said they could get it....for $310. Lol

Like Cubby suggested DannyBoy, shop around. BevMo in Long Beach & Pasadena both have Bud Light for $94.99 (plus deposit).
Beer - the 5th food group!

Just found a local shop that supplied me with a 1/2 barrel of Guinness for $221 CDN. Beats the $310 my usual shop is charging now. No keg deposit either.

prices going up
I live in rural Wisconsin. I retired here in 2005. One of the local taverns offered to sell half barrels at their cost. I like Old Milwaukee and it is supposed to be cheaper. In 2005 that cost was $56. in 2009 its $90.
I have been enjoying tap beer at home for 20+ years. My first half barrel cost less than $30. I have 2 empty kegs I can use so there is no deposit. I think a 60% increase in 4 years may indicate unwillingness to handle the product on the part of the distributer.
More research to follow.

Most beers have gone up significantly over the last few years due to higher ingredient costs, higher raw materials cost (glass), and higher fuel costs.

The phone book, under "liquor stores". Unless you live in Utah or a dry county in the South, practically everyone carries kegs of bud or miller or can get you one in a day or two at most.

Same here. I just got a 1/2 keg of Coors Light for $69.99 at Total Wine. Yuengling is $72.99. Add tax and it costs about $80.00 out the door. I've had a shell since I was in college so I just swap out and don't have to worry about the deposit.

Due to a recent tax increase here in Alberta, just bought a 1/2 barrel of MGD was $240 including tax but no deposit as I returned an empty keg!! Really not much of a cost savings here over buying canned/bottled beer when on sale.

1/2 barrel of Yuengling in Bowie, Md. at Rip's is $95.00, with tax $100.70 out the door. Plus $30 cash deposit if your not returning an empty keg.

I get my kegs from St George Brewery in Hampton VA
Currently they charge $108 for a 1/2 barrel and $50 for a sixtel.
I'm currently working my way through a 1/2 of Brown ale and a sixer of IPA.

They JUST started selling Founders in Missouri. I got a 1/2 barrel of Founder's Centennial IPA for $160. I paid $190 for this same beer in Illinois almost a year ago.

1/2 keg of Canadian $237.00 + deposit of $50.00
-
Picked up a 1/6 Sam Adams Summer Ale and was charged $89.99 from Total Wine in Tampa, FL. Now that was almost $15 more than the regular 1/6 Boston Lagar.
What really suprised me is the manager told me that he should have charged me more because his cost on it was $85. Now looking at some of the prices here that seems crazy!
I have a 20l of Grimbergen coming Friday and that is $90.
