Default Thermostat swap

I just got an older Kenmore upright freezer for my conversion project. As it seems cheaper to swap thermostats than use an external temp unit, Im planning on getting a fridge therm to put in. Generally speaking, are all thermostats compatable? Sears.com seems to stock replacement thermostats, but as my unit is a freezer, I cant really search by model number. Thanks in advance!

It actually probably wouldn't be cheaper. You can pick up a Johnson Controls digital unit for $60 and it would be a much more reliable method of holding a constant temp on the beer. I'n not sure about the fridge thermostat swap, they're usually sealed bulb type switches so it can be difficult to install them. Hooking it up electrically should be the same as the freezer's thermostat.

thanks for your help. I priced a johnson controls unit, and think i might go this route, but i guess theres no harm in seeing if i can get a therm from a junked fridge to work first. Also, im not sure what is meant by "sealed bulb" type thermostat. I looked all over the inside of the freezer and cant find where the thermometer is, so if i do get a new thermostat, i guess ill have to carefully drill through the back to house the thermometer.. any other suggestions?
