Default Sanyo 4912 Not Cold Enough

I bought a used Sanyo 4912 about a month ago that had been converted. I spent the first couple of weeks tweaking the temperature--too warm, too cold, too warm, etc. I would barely turn the knob, and had huge temp swings.

Then after a couple of weeks, it was just too warm. I've had it set to "max" and it was 59 degrees.

I read somewhere today that turning the knob on the thermostat back and forth might correct the problem.

It's now down to 56. I've noticed that the compressor is running very frequently (not sure exactly how often). Is it dead, or is there something I can do to save it?

Thanks in advance...
