Default What Size Chest Freezer do I need?

Hi all, I plan on building/converting my first Kegerator this winter. My loving wife is buying me a conversion kit for Christmas. I plan on converting a chest freezer and putting a tower on top. I want to have 2 kegs. Ideally Id like the ability to have two full size kegs (1/2 barrel) but I suppose I could live with a setup that had one 1/2 barrel and one 1/6 barrel.

Does anybody know what size chest freezer I would need for this? I plan on keeping the gas inside the freezer so that I dont have to drill any holes in the sides of the freezer, just on the lid for the tower.

Any help would be appreciated...

I think 13 cubic feet is the minimum you will need. I have a 15 cubic feet freezer and and the two full kegs fit fine with about 6 inches to spare depth wise. I have the C02 and regulator on the step over the compressor.

I was looking for the same thing when I was getting started and remember that there was very little middle ground in terms of the space. Meaning any freezer I found either held one full keg or two full kegs. I couldn't find any that could hold a full 1/2 barrel and a 1/6 barrel.

My suggestion would be to search craigslist or newspapers to find a used freezer that has about 14-18 cubic feet. The smaller you go, all the dimensions begin to shrink and cutting it close on any one dimension will either be inconvenient in terms of maintenance or they will make it so the conversion will not work at all. I know it is hard to be patient to wait for the right freezer to pop up, but if you can be, you will find a good one for a good price.

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

I have an 8.8 cu ft chest freezer and it will hold a 1/2 and a 1/6 barrel along with the CO2 tank.
