Default where should t-stat sensor be placed?

I bought a digital thermostat but dont know where to put the sensor inside the kegerator. When the sensor is directly on the keg shell it is around 35. When the sensor is proped up in the air it reads a warmer temperature. Where should the sensor go to get the best temperature reading? Thanks.
