Default Question about buying a keg

I know this is a stupid question, but I'm just about to finish my deep freeze conversion with a dual tap. Where to you guys get your beer? I thought there there were deposits on kegs when you buy from my local liquor stores, which you lose if you don't bring them back in a few days. How can I avoid this, as they seem like a pretty good hunk of change?

Just go to your local liquor or beverage store. I get mine from my local liquor store and the first time I payed a 20 dollar deposit for a 1/4 keg. Each time I go back and return the keg and pick up a new one I just show them the recipt with the 20 dollar charge and they just charge me for the beer then. At least for me it doesent matter how long I keep the keg.

Thanks for the reply. I've been lurking around this forum for some time and it really has been a ton of help. Does anybody else have any input?

My deposit was 50 bucks (stainless steel fetches a good price around here), and i can take it back whenever I please, not within a certain amount of time. I also don't need to provide a receipt as in my state, the keg is registered to me and a record of it is kept on file.

Talk to the folks who run the liquor store where you are wanting to get your beer. Them knowing that you are keeping beer on tap in your home and will be a return customer will get you better service than the frat boy that will use the keg for tossing after it is empty.

On another note, at least in my state, if you have a credit card, they will usually put the credit card on your ticket info, and that way you're not out any money on the deposit unless you don't bring the keg back...

They should give you your deposit back even if it takes months to drink. They are just making sure they get the cooperage back. It is a big problem in the industry and this system is barely working, in the near future we may see this deposit go up to more closely match the value of the empty keg (which $20 doesn't touch).

Good thing you don't like in NY. There is a $90 deposit, it must be returned within 90 days, and the pouch w/ the deposit paperwork MUST NOT BE REMOVED from the keg. Violate either of the last two and you forfeit the deposit. Thank you state legislature...

Sorry to hear about difficulties in other states concerning kegs! I'm a college student in Philadelphia, PA...when we decide to go for a keg of the cheap stuff (natural light) we go across the bridge into NJ and get the keg, for $35 and the deposit for $10.

Natty Light, bleh. I'm lucky that I have a friend that owns a liquor store. No deposits and no hassles on keeping kegs as long as I want. Longest I've had one has only been three weeks though.

MD isn't that bad. It's usually a $25 or so deposit and you have to fill out a sticker that goes on the keg. No big deal really.

My deposit depends on where i go. Im a college student and around here there are 2 main places where i get my kegs. One of them is $30 deposit and it has to be back within 48 hours so i only go there when my main place out outta stock of what i want. The main place i go to isnt a college liquor store and there it just recently went from $10 to $20 deposit on kegs but just bring it back whenever with either your reciept or if you leave the keg registration on it your fine.

P.S. cra33 im a little jealous. A keg of natty lite @ my school is $56 at the cheapest i've found. Considering i buy between 30-40 of these a year it would add up haha.

I found a place that requires a $10 deposit and they put it in an envelope and marked it Co2 system. So I just go in now and ask for an exchange when I get a new keg.

I got lucky, I know a guy that owns and operates this little beer store and he doesn't charge me anything for a deposit.

My place charges $10 for a quarter or half and $20 for a log. They charge the deposit fee every keg. If you bring a empty back they will issue a credit to your purchase. If I go to get a new keg without an empty i pay an extra $20 for the deposit. If I come back with two empties I get a $40 credit. It all washes out in the end.

oneandonlychaz-

I just went yesterday to the beer distributor. I was told deposit prices are about to jump from $10 to $30! It does all wash out in the end, but it's still a pain to front the extra money!

In Tampa I use Total Wine for kegs. They have about 40 diffrent brews on hand and can 3 day special order a bunch more. It was a $30 deposit on the first keg, then just trade ins there after. Happiness is cold Guiness after a hot day at work!

I'm having the same problem its a 30 dollar deposit but if you keep it more than 3 days you only get 10 back. can i just keep a keg from one place and have another fill it up or just trade my empty one for a full one with no dep?

That likely depends on several things. Remember, the brewery owns the keg. A store may not want to waive a deposit on a keg of Deschutes or Boulevard if you bring in a Bud or Coors light keg.
