Default Question from new member

Hello, I just found these forums, and I had a quick question. I have been searching for a kegerator, and I found one for sale! The thing is, it is not electric, it has 120" coils in a center compartment that you fill with ice to keep the beer cold (it is advertised as portable, etc.) . It is a dual keg, and it is pretty nice. Would a regular kegerator like ones sold on this site be better, or would the ice cooling system work, or would the beer go flat quicker as there is no cooler on the keg, just the coils. Thanks alot!

What you are looking at is called a jockey box. It is used to cool beer in situations where there is no electricity and potability is needed. The 120' coils also allow you to cool beer that is not necessarily cold and dispense it at a cold temperature. You just take a chilled keg, keep it in the shade a pour it through the jockey box and you are good to go. This is opposed to a cold plate or a jockey box with shorter coils that you would need to ice the keg down more to keep the beer cold. It all depends on what you are looking for, these portably systems are more for short term use. You would have difficulty maintaining any kind a equilibrium because of the temperature fluctuation. If you are looking for a kegerator this would not replace one and I would spend the money but depending on the price you might pick this up for parties, picnics and tailgating.
