Default Changing PSI with keg tapped?

I'm very new to this, the guy who I bought the house from left me his kegerator (It's a Danby.. I know, I know) - I just got a nice cold keg of Sierra Nevada and plopped it in there and tapped it (I pulled the blow off valve on the coupler dealie a few times before tapping at recommendation of a friend) - I looked on the CO2 gauges and it's only at 10psi, though.

Is it ok/advisable/etc. to change the psi while the keg is tapped or do I have to take everything apart before adjusting the psi up a few notches? Afraid I'm going to blow myself up somehow if I do things wrong.

Thanks for your help, take it easy on the noob

Additional question:

I'm not planning on drinking much out of the keg until next weekend, I assume the beer wont go bad in the meantime (not like in college when a tapped keg went bad in a day or so...) - is this correct?

Keep the keg cold(36-38 degrees)and under co2 pressure and it should be good for about 90 days. Yes you can adjust the pressure up, shut the co2 off under the regulator then make your adjustment, turn valve on,it may take a little while for the pressure in the keg to get to the new setting.

What is your altitude? At sea level you would want to keep the beer around 14 psi to keep it carbonated properly. Since you bled the gas off of the keg and hooked it back up to find the guage was reading 10 psi your beer my flatten a little by the weekend. As Larry said you can turn it up. I would do this and then get it to 14 before letting it sit for a few days.
