Default gas confusion

had problems with the lager starting to froth after prolonged use. the beer suppliers changed the gas from CO2 to mixed nitrogen/CO2. seems to have stopped the froth but lager is often dead at the bottom of keg, tastes a bit funny too. not using a cooled room for kegs just a jockey and thought maybe the coil just needed to be extended. were the suppliers right in simply switching the gas?
