that piece looks like the thing that acts as a one way valve preventing beer from backing up into the gas side of your system. If it is indeed that piece, the "chisel shaped" end of it will be horizontally split, allowing gas to flow through it in that direction only. It is meant to drop into the gas inlet of the keg coupler, chisel end first, before you attach the CO2 supply hose. You can check which way the flow goes by putting it up to your mouth and blowing through it (one way will be pretty easy, the other damn near impossible because of the chisel point shape) but make sure to wash it after you do that, otherwise you just stuck your mouth on every beer that comes out of your keg. I'm also pretty sure that MicroMatic has exploded views of most of the parts, and if you look at a keg coupler you'll see that same part. The time when this part is really important is when you're first tapping, and the beer squirts up into the beer line under its own natural pressure....you don't want it squirting over into your CO2 line because the gas isn't on yet (the inside of the CO2 line could get moldy and make the beer taste like &$^%#)
