The faucet is right hand thread. Although it is confusing, picture the faucet itself as the screw and you are turning the hole instead Gamblingmatt, it sound like when you replaced the shank assy., you didn't tighten the nut on the inside of the tower. To take off a stubborn faucet, run some warm water or cleaning chemical solution around the collar that holds the faucet to the shank. That should help break it loose. Tapman
