Each state has it's own laws about transporting alcohol into the state. Truth is, some states are really strict on carrying more than a 'small personal' amount of liquor/beer across state lines. Utah would likely confiscate a keg of beer, but they're crazy religious strict out there.

Here in Missouri, it's illegal to transport more than 5 gallons into the state without paying taxes on it. I would think that MOST cops would concede a keg is for personal use if you explained yourself and were polite, but all it takes is one cop on a power trip with his hitler mustache and aviator sunglasses to ruin your day. Or all it takes is you to have an attitude problem about the speeding ticket the guy might be writing you for him to slap extra charges on you.

here's Georgia's law... found it...
looks like you can legally bring in 7.75 gallons, which is a 1/4 barrel.

http://www.lexis-nexis.com/hottopics/gacode/default.asp

also note in paragraph 3 that each individual in the car is authorized to possess up to that amount. So take a buddy with you to grab a 1/2 barrel/full keg (15.5 gallons) and you're golden.

SORRY
Didn't realize my link didn't go directly to the law I was referring to. Select TITLE 3 - CHAPTER 3 - ARTICLE 1. Law is under 3-3-8.

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed.
Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery
and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might
be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself,
"It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than
be selfish and worry about my liver."
