Combine the two. I think you should use the 1.5" i.d hose and still cut the 3" hole. You would not get proper return air otherwise. I have the Danby and did the mods. I cut the opening to 3" (actually 3.5, then 3" on the tower bracket due to a mistake) and routed the hose from my blower up the tower. I then inserted my beer line inside the hose and it runs up into the tower. The cool air cools the beer line and then returns through the tower. I insulated the inside of the tower also to provide extra cooling as the "warm" air returns.

I get perfect beer with this method.
